Jacky Winter is pleased to present our first show for the year, Beyond Beyond, a group exhibition curated by Beci Orpin. Beyond Beyond features nine artists, designers and makers from around the world. Each have illustrative qualities to their work yet take their practice beyond the bounds of illustration and into other dimensions.
Beyond Beyond brings together a diverse collection of practitioners, working in a range of mediums including weaving, soft-sculpture ceramics and laser-cut wood. The show also marks the Australian debut for a number of the featured international artists.
For Orpin, who personally describes herself as “a designer that has exhibitions”, she struggles calling the pieces she makes for shows “artworks”. Orpin feels that it is often hard to find a place for this kind of work - not high end art, not low-brow either, but its own genre yet to be defined, falling somewhere between art, design, new craft and illustration.
Lamington Drive, which exists to simultaneously explore the idea of showcasing commercial artists in a traditional gallery space and as a venue in which illustrators and designers can explore this same art/commercial art tension in their practices, provides the perfect place to house this eclectic collection.
Alice Oehr is an illustrator and graphic designer based in Melbourne.
Ana Serrano is a first generation Mexican American born in Los Angeles, California in 1983. Inspired by both of the cultural contexts in her life, she creates work utilising a variety of mediums including drawing, collage, sculpture and motion. Her work bears reference to those in low socioeconomic positions, with particular interest in the customs and beliefs, as well as the architecture, fashion and informal economies, present within this segment of society.
Beci Orpin is a designer-illustrator and curator based in Melbourne, Australia. She has been freelancing for over 15 years and exhibiting her work both locally and internationally.
Cody Hudson is a Chicago-based artist, also known as Struggle Inc. Known for his production of clean, multi-dimensional graphics, Hudson’s design aesthetic is part urban modernism and part organic visual deconstruction. His graphic work, paintings and site-specific installations have been exhibited throughout the US, Europe and Japan.
Kim Jaeger is a ceramicist based in Melbourne who is known for her range of Pot Heads – hand made planter pots that are characterised by unique faces. Kim is interested in the functionality of art and how we live with objects in our everyday lives. Kim has recently exhibited her work in Los Angeles, Melbourne and Sydney.
Maryanne Moodie is a fibre-obsessed maker from Australia who now resides in Brooklyn, NYC. Moodie designs and creates woven wall hangings, inspired by the intricacy of vintage textiles, traditional costuming, modern art and the natural world.
Michele Lockwood spent the first half of her life growing up on New York City streets, immersed in the art, culture and grit. It was this initial part of her life that has made the last eleven years living on a rural Australian property such a complimentary pursuit. Now deeply connected to the natural world, one hemisphere balancing the other, her life and art reflect the time spent in both places.
Mogu Takahashi was born in 1984. A self-taught artist/illustrator based in Tokyo, Japan, Takahashi’s creations are known to be playful and colourful. She works within various mediums such as drawing, painting, ceramics and puppets. Her work has been exhibited in major cities around the world including Tokyo, New York, Paris, London, Barcelona and Gothenburg.
Tim Lahan is an artist and illustrator living and working in New York City. His works have been exhibited throughout the United States as well as the Netherlands, Germany, France, and the UK.
