Past Show
BIG!
by Daniel Emma
6 – 21 Dec, 2013

Following a year and a half worth of work, Daniel Emma are excited to announce their first major show in Australia. Using a still life format, the pair will be exploring BIG! ideas using furniture, lighting and tabletop items in collaboration with Jacky Winter. The event will also reveal the first results of Daniel Emma’s table and bench project with Tait.
To those familiar with Daniel Emma’s work, it is unusual and exciting to see them making BIG! things. Typically, they create objects barely bigger than a basketball. But the still life format of this show will rely on a diverse range of materials, from hand-blown glass to machined aluminum, and truly be like nothing they have done before.
Inspired by the still life format of BIG! will include two special programs in the exhibition. The first involves a spread of drawing materials and an invitation to illustrate Daniel Emma’s still life scene and pin the work to the gallery walls. This program will be made possible by the kind support of K.W.Doggett Fine Paper. The second involves two still life workshops to complement the contributory nature of BIG!, hosted by Jacky Winter artists beci Orpin and Madeleine Stamer. Additional information regarding these workshops will be released closer to the exhibition launch date.
Daniel To and Emma Aiston established the design studio Daniel Emma in 2008 to provide an outlet for their love of Industrial Design. The studio manages a variety of creative projects, ranging from desk products to large-scale installations. Daniel Emma aim to create the unexpected out of everyday items and deceptively simple forms. They draw inspiration from the diversity of Australian lifestyles and culture.
Daniel Emma’s designs aim to be ‘nice’, but to define that as their only quality would be an oversight.
Daniel and Emma met whilst studying Industrial Design in Adelaide, Australia. After graduating together in 2007, they spent almost two years gaining experience at various design studios in London, such as Marc Newson, Thorsten Van Elten and Committee. Daniel Emma first exhibited in London in 2008 and the duo have since been shown in Paris, Tokyo, New York, Berlin and throughout Australia.
In 2009 Wallpaper* magazine named Daniel Emma as the design graduates to watch, and in 2010 they were awarded “most promising talent” at 100% Design London. They also took home the Bombay Sapphire Australian Design Discovery award. More recently, Daniel Emma’s clients have included Hay (Denmark), Wallpaper* (UK), Field (USA), Thorsten Van Elten (UK), Attica Restaurant (AUS) and Tait (AUS).
