Kill Your Darlings
by Guy Shield
6 Apr – 6 May, 2017

Jacky Winter is pleased to present Kill Your Darlings the debut solo exhibition of Melbourne-based artist Guy Shield. This will be our final opening and exhibition at Sackville Street before we re-open at our new Collingwood location in June.
Kill Your Darlings is a collection of 19 original cover artworks by Shield from 2012 through 2017 for the Australian quarterly publication of the same name.
The works (presented in both original ink form, and full colour limited edition Giclee prints) represent Guy’s ability to capture a variety of single-frame narratives across a range of subjects and moments. Inspired by graphic novels and drawn from his own fly-on-the-wall style of curiosity for everyday life, Guy takes pleasure in crafting each piece through traditional and modern approaches to image making.
Guy carefully builds scenes that provoke intrigue and familiarity through formal compositions and engaging colour palettes which ask the viewer to see the beauty in the seemingly mundane. Guy’s fascination with people and nature shows through in his work, enticing viewers to get lost in atmospheric environments or vignettes of a stranger’s life. This collection also charts the development of his illustrative style and a progression of scale, detail and technique across a 5 year window in his career. Offering viewers the chance to see hand-crafted original drawings alongside their lovingly rendered counterparts.
Guy Shield is a Melbourne-based illustrator with a passion for scenic storytelling and reflections on the beauty of everyday moments. Through light, colour and detail, Guy takes a cinematic approach to creating hand drawn moments in time. His work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, GQ, Granta, Boston Globe, Variety and many other periodicals. Guy employs a mixture of traditional ink and graphite along with digital colour to bring his pieces to full immersive colour.
