Mossless: The United States (2002-2015)
by Mossless, The Heavy Collective and IPF
12 – 14 Nov, 2015

Jacky Winter is pleased to host the Melbourne leg of IPF’s touring exhibition Mossless: The United States (2005-2015), curated by Mossless in collaboration with The Heavy Collective.
Mossless was founded in 2009 by Romke Hoogwaerts. Initially a blog profiling emerging photographers, in 2012, Mossless came offline with the release of Issue 1, a photo book that brought its presence into stores and galleries around the world. The release of Mossless Issue 3 in 2014 was a true milesotone for the publication —Time magazine listing it as a top photo book of the year. For Issue 3 Romke and his partner Grace Leigh featured work by more than 100 artists on the theme of America.
The exhibition is a collection of work by nine photographers who have captured a fragment of life in America. Featuring Daniel Shea, Whitten Sabattini, Lindsay D’Addato, Eva O’Leary, Yeon J Yue, Timothy Briner, Mo Costello, Suzanna Zak and Juan Madrid. In the spirit of iconic photographers who came to define America’s past through their work, such as Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange and Stephen Shore, each of the contemporary artists involved have made a significant mark on the social landscape during the past decade.
The first instalment of Mossless, took place in New York City at Ludlow Studios. Following IPF Melbourne, the show will then travel for a third and final instalment in Sydney at China Heights.
The Independent Photography Festival is the annual celebration of independent photography, its application and practice. IPF was initiated in 2012 by Hard Workers Club, Smalltime Projects and The Good Copy. IPF exists in an effort to bring together the living, breathing artists and creatives who make up our inclusive but nowadays very screen-based discipline, in a real-life context in galleries and venues across Melbourne. For the first time in 2015, IPF ventures further than Melbourne, touring Los Angeles, New York, London, and Sydney.
