Potluck

11 – 27 Aug, 2016

Jacky Winter is pleased to present Potluck – the debut solo exhibition of artist and illustrator Karan Singh.
Potluck is an exploration into the visual language and symbology of superstition. Singh brings together a collection of brightly coloured limited edition giclee prints adorned with luck-based gestures, objects and icons.
According to Singh, Superstition is something that has been an inherent part of my life, growing up in an Indian household. Whilst I myself am not overtly superstitious, there are still beliefs I grew up with, which out of habit I find hard to dismiss. This led to an interest in how simple beliefs become a necessity.
Souvenirs are enshrined, numbers are immortalised and mascots are worshipped. While on one level, a colourful homage to superstition, the works also allude to the banality of these same subjects. Singh highlights their glory as well as our reliance upon them, and seeks to identify how our investment in superstitious symbology can alter their significance and our perceptions of safety and prosperity.
These superstitions which encompass our lives reflect our desire for security and certainty, however, despite our best efforts it’s down to potluck.
